Ericsson enhances user experience and affordability with next-generation mobile broadband module

today unveiled its most advanced mobile broadband module, uniquely designed with innovative features to provide a richer and cost-effective internet experience for all. The next-generation module marks the latest milestone for Ericsson, furthering the company’s vision of enabling communication for all.

Ericsson’s F3607gw mobile-broadband module for HSPA/GPRS/EDGE networks, to be released in June, will provide enhanced functionality and convenience through its innovative features, reduced power consumption, prolonged battery life and an increased level of integration, reducing the number of necessary components and therefore cost. The new module will also provide built-in mobile broadband support for Microsoft Windows 7.

Mats Norin, Vice President of Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules, says: „The combination of leading technology and innovative design in the next-generation module is key to delivering a superior user experience at an affordable price. This module release confirms Ericsson’s commitment to making the benefits of connectivity available to everyone.”

An important facet of the F3607gw is the unique wake-on wireless feature. By remaining connected while a notebook or netbook is in sleep mode, the module’s wake-on wireless feature enables users to remotely wake up the device. This innovative technology will allow a new set of applications to be built into the computer to further enhance security and instant-on functionalities, such as the ability to disable the computer in case of theft, or instant distribution of important messages and security updates.

Operators can also combine the wake-on wireless feature and embedded GPS functionality to create a range of differentiating services for consumers and the enterprise market, including remote manageability, security updates, asset protection and tracking and geo-fencing. The module can also be used for content push services, such as podcasts, public warnings, traffic updates and database updates.

Specifically, the wake-on wireless feature supports security solutions based on Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology. An anti-theft management service in the network can send a message via SMS to the mobile-broadband module inside the notebook, which securely transfers the message to Intel’s Anti-Theft function inside the processor platform. This takes appropriate actions, such as completely locking the computer and making it unusable. When the notebook is located and recovered, an unlock message can be sent to the notebook that makes the data accessible again.

NTT Com to Offer IPv4/IPv6 Dual-stack Corporate VPN

TOKYO, JAPAN – NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it will launch an Internet-protocol (IP) virtual private network (VPN) service that supports both conventional IPv4 and next-generation IPv6 protocols for enterprise customers in Japan, beginning March 23.

This will be the country’s first commercial IPv6-compatible IP-VPN service based on Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS).

The IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack connectivity will be available as an option for Arcstar™ IP-VPN services. It will enable both IPv4 and IPv6 to be used on a single network, allowing enterprise customers to continue using IPv4 while introducing IPv6 for a relatively low cost.

With IP addresses nearing exhaustion in the IPv4 world, there is a growing need for enterprise network services that are compatible with IPv6, the next-generation Internet protocol that offers a massive capacity for new addresses as well as enhanced network security.

NTT Com began providing Arcstar IP-VPN with IPv6 connectivity on a trial basis in September 2007. It will now apply the know-how and experience gained during the trial toward its commercial dual-stack service.

Arcstar IP-VPN have been Japan’s most popular corporate IP-VPN service for seven consecutive years, according to a survey conducted by Nikkei Communications magazine in September 2008.

NTT America Highlights Today’s Applications at IPv6 Implementors Conference

New York, NY – NTT America, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) and a global IP network services provider, today announced Cody Christman, NTT America’s Director of Product Engineering, will discuss how to enhance existing networks to support both IPv6 and IPv4 as well as how to leverage the benefits IPv6 brings to current and emerging applications at the IPv6 Implementors Conference. The conference, which will be held March 19 and 20, 2009 in Mountain View, CA, will focus on addressing and sharing IPv6 implementation experience, advice and associated research.

IPv6 is the successor to IPv4, the current protocol used on the Internet. Implementing IPv6 offers a variety of benefits including an almost infinite address space, scalability, better security, lower capital and operational expense and a number of enhancements for multicast and quality of service support.

“We have seen a growing interest in IPv6, particularly in how to smoothly make the transition from a company’s current network infrastructure,” said Cody Christman, Director of Product Engineering, NTT America. “We have also had successful implementations of emerging applications such as IPTV and earthquake monitoring systems that really show the benefits of using IPv6 today.”

Both network engineers and business professionals will need to understand IPv6 capabilities and learn how to optimally use the dramatically larger and more flexible address space, automatic “plug and play” features, better end-to-end security, and broader support for mobile devices. The accelerated pace of IPv6 deployment internationally means that companies need to start to test and roll out content to the IPv6 side of the Web in the near term. With the IPv6 technology in place, business can take advantage of features that lower cost and complexity of peer to peer communication, improve network mobility for wireless devices and allow devices to self configure, creating new business opportunities for content and commerce on the Web.

NTT America has been an advocate for the advancement of IPv6 for more than a decade. The company has just launched a microsite to provide a forum for those interested in all aspects of IPv6 education and deployment to share information, questions and insights. The IPv6 microsite can be found here: http://www.v6atwork.com. In January 2008 and again in 2009, NTT America was selected by the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee (ICAC) to demonstrate NTT Com’s IPv6 Internet-based Earthquake Early Warning System and an implementation of IPTV over IPv6. The company also spoke at this year’s International CES about consumer-based IPv6 applications.

The expanding business of multinationals in Vietnam has sharply raised the need for local back-up facilities, such as data centers, to retain business continuity. At the same time, the increasing penetration of the Internet in Vietnam has intensified the demand for data centers as communication platforms for stable Internet business.

The Thang Long Data Center will provide wide-ranging services, including server co-location, mail hosting, web hosting and other offerings tailored to specific needs, enabling customers to streamline operations and reduce IT costs. Customer support will be provided in English, Japanese and Vietnamese.

The Tier 3-level data center has extensive redundancy for commercial power supply, air conditioning, UPS, and electricity generation and distribution, with no single point of failure. Stable power supply and air conditioning are ensured during power outages, which occasionally occur in Vietnam.

Safety measures cover natural disasters and fire, and security measures include a facility access management system, surveillance cameras and rack-key management. Network equipment and servers are fully monitored, and power and air-conditioning systems are checked regularly for maintenance.

The Thang Long Data Center’s reliable communication services will be backed by redundant backbone and access lines, as well as connectivity for multiple carriers and Internet service providers as required by customers.

For systems that incorporate data centers as one element, NTT Communications (Vietnam) Ltd., NTT Com’s local wholly owned subsidiary, will collaborate with GDS to offer comprehensive planning, design, maintenance and consultation covering total system integration and solutions.

GDS is also preparing to launch a data center in Ho Chi Minh City.

New WLAN Service Feeds Location Data to Mobile Devices
NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) launched today a free push-type service that feeds information about nearby places of interest to iPod® touch and iPhone™ 3G (Ver. 2.2 or higher) owners when they use HOTSPOT, NTT Com’s monthly flat-rate service for wireless local area network (WLAN) access in Japan. NTT Com operates more than 4,000 HOTSPOT locations nationwide.

The new service, named Cocotan! (from Japanese koko „here” and tan „search”), automatically provides a list of recommended restaurants, tourism spots , etc. when a user visits a HOTSPOT access point. Recommendations, far from being random, are carefully selected based on computer-based analysis of consumer-generated content, including blogs and Web reviews. The user simply clicks on an item of interest to view details.

The information is provided with the cooperation of i.JTB Corp. and NTT Resonant Inc.

Cocotan! identifies the user’s current location based on the WLAN access point they have logged into.

Owners of the iPod® touch and iPhone™ 3G are expected to use Cocotan! as a practical means of quickly and easily learning about nearby places of interest via HOTSPOT access points located conveniently throughout the country. The service is provided in Japanese only.

The application, which is available for free download on Apple’s online App Store, was co-developed by NTT Com and Koozyt, Inc.

Cocotan! also allows the user to collect a visitor stamp in a virtual travel log when they use a HOTSPOT access point. In addition to providing the user with a stamp-based travel record, a Japanese tradition, proprietors can organize loyalty programs and other user benefits based on the virtual stamps.

The Cocotan! service is available to individuals subscribing to HOTSPOT, OPEN Plan or Open Plan Light, as well as people using temporary HOTSPOT login IDs won during an i.JTB Corp. campaign between February 17 and March 3.

As a special introductory campaign, 100 users who collect stamps from 5 HOTSPOT access points between March 9 and 22 and then answer a survey will be randomly selected to each receive a 5,000 yen travel coupon from JTB Corporation.
